New printing equipment

There are advancements in the printing technolgy.
Last Graph Expo 2008 (Drupa) showed some interesting developments.
The HP Inkjet Web Press , is one on them.
We can see from the HP site (1) some of the features.
The HP Inkjet Web Press represents a new product category for HP in the commercial printing marketplace. Specifically targeting high-volume production operations, the HP Inkjet Web Press establishes a unique combination of width, productivity, print economics, and print quality at high speed.
Taking our design guidance directly from high volume printers, HP is delivering a Press with a 762mm web that runs up to 122 meters per minute. Width and linear speed comprise the two key elements of productivity, and the HP Inkjet Web Press equation delivers up to 2,600 full color impressions per minute. Additionally, our wider platform will enable printers to bring the benefits of digital to new areas. Book signatures, full sized newspaper broadsheets, and a variety of multi-up formats for mailings are now possible in full digital color.
Powerful Foundation in Proven HP Technologies The HP Inkjet Web Press leverages HP’s $1 billion+ investment in HP Scalable Printing Technology to drive down the cost of digital color for high volume printers. The modular nature of the technology enables HP to easily and seamlessly scale printheads across and down the web for fast, high quality output. HP Pigment Inks plus Bonding Agent not only deliver crisp text and sharp images, but also provide printers with the ability to choose from a wide range of standard uncoated papers, freeing them from the need to use more costly specialty inkjet paper.
Xerox is also developing technology, Xerox iGen3™ 110 and iGen3™ 90 Digital Production Presses.
From Xerox site (2) we can verify some key issues.

Also Xeikom Web fed press, the Xeikon 8000 is,accordig to Xeikon site, a high-speed web-fed digital colour press created for profitable printing. Reducing your production costs and time is our primary concern.
Astonishing printing speed (3)
The Xeikon 8000 prints multi-page documents at an impressive speed of 230 A4 pages per minute, which translates into 244 letter size pages per minute and a duty cycle of 8,5 million A4 pages per month.
Speed alone is not enough to upgrade your productivity. The robust parts combined with Xeikon’s long-time experience and the best designers in the field result in a superior uptime of over 90% for real volume applications.
Transcend the limits of your production capacity and streamline your workflow with the Xeikon 8000.
Xeikon’s long history in the development of digital workflows becomes clearly visible in the latest generation of our X-800 front-end.
Authentic and continued growth comes from securing new print jobs and offering real value to your customer. The Xeikon 8000 is a web-fed press that handles scalable paper widths of 320 - 512 mm with virtually no restriction in sheet length. It can help you find and fulfil those new business opportunities because it accommodates standard formats up to A2 full-bleed or B2 as well as non-standard formats. Ready to print the longest jobs on a wide range of paper stocks from 40 to 350 gsm, it can also print on a wide choice of other substrates such as polyester film, transfer material, and label stock adding a wide assortment of value-generating applications.

Some of this web printing presses are achieving 122 m/min (2 m/sec) which is far from the offset web presses that can go to around 15m/sec, as is the case of Sunday 4000 or 5000 from Goss International. This speed and the difference in costs, as well as quality consistency, can it be overcomed in the future?

Dear Pedro,

Congratulations for your article.
In fact, the printing industry is really changing. In the last years we saw quite a lot of printers making investementes in new presses that could print a lot of pages in high speed. Presses that can print 64, 72, 80 or 96 pages A4 at very high speeds, like 15m/s or more. In fact, some presses can print up to 17m/s...
With the world economic and finantial crises, we see that most of the editors are loosing advertisement. This means that they are printing less pages and their runs are shorter and shorter, every year. Both editors and printers must find a way to keep this market alive. In the ladt years we saw that many manufactors sarted moving to digital printing. This is a technologie that allaws to print diferential copies. In fact, these manufactors are improving theis technologie every year. They are becoming faster, the quality is improving and the pagination is growing. But i think that it will take some years that this technologie can competite in the long runs.
The printing prices of the industry, in the last 10 years went down about 50%. This pressure on prices did not stop. All over the world the price we can get for a 64 pages signature is much cheeper, nowadays, than 10 years ago. I think that prices will keep on going down in the next two years, at least.
This means that the off set industry will still be competitive in the future.
But this crates another problem. With this very low prices, printers in europe and in us are loosing a lot of money. Many printing shops will not survive.
Printers don't have the chance to make new investements in the near future. Manufactors don't sell their equipement...
I think that even on the off set, there is a future. Printers must provide a service. Editors and printers must work together to find a way to defende their products.
Even the new generation, or even the wiki generation like to read a magazine or a newspaper. A nice cathalogue or some guide...
But it is not easy to predict what the future will be in 10 years...
We must pay attention to the editors needs and try to antecipate those needs, so that printers can provide a propper job, despite wich technologie they use.
